The village under the wings of a bird is a boat on the sandbar
2023
Feathers, generators, sand, transparent tiles, old windows, 3D printing accessories, scanning electron microscope images, etc.
The Qujiang River flows from west to east through Chuanchang Village in Longyou County, Zhejiang Province, China. Over time, the river’s sediments have formed sandbars and mudflats, providing abundant nutrients for aquatic plants, animals, and agricultural production. As a result, Chuanchang Village and its surrounding areas have become important stopover points along migratory routes for birds. In certain historical periods, large-scale sand extraction from the Qujiang River significantly altered the local river channels, ecological conditions, and bird habitats.
The river’s sediments have shaped the contours of the river and the village, and they continue to influence how birds stop and rest in the area.
I collected goose feathers to construct wind-powered generators mounted on a rooftop. When the wind moves the generators, the electricity produced drives a single grain of river sediment suspended on a fine thread in the gallery, causing it to vibrate.

The Old House On Seed
2023
Paper mulberry, weeds, bird droppings, fluorescent lamps, automatic sprayers, etc.
Paper mulberry is one of the few tree species capable of growing spontaneously and eventually becoming a large tree within densely populated urban areas. Its seeds are dispersed through bird droppings, yet in environments heavily covered by concrete, asphalt, and landscaping projects, only a very small number are able to enter the soil and continue growing. Most paper mulberry trees survive only briefly in cracks in walls, ruins, riverbanks, and neglected vacant spaces.
In Longyou County, I collected paper mulberry seeds from bird droppings found on the surfaces of artificial structures built on a river sandbank. I then broke open the floor of a house built in 1966 and replanted these long-dormant seeds into soil that had been sealed for more than half a century.
I connected an automatic irrigation system to an outdoor air-conditioning unit, continuously collecting the condensed water produced by the system to irrigate these plants.

Bird Hoe
2023
Wooden sticks, 3D printed skulls, etc.
From a longer time scale, many behaviors such as bird dispersal of plant seeds, nest building, and predation are subtly shaping the landscape. To me, every bird is a flying hoe.I scanned and enlarged the skull of a heron and combined it with tree sticks to form a hoe.
2023
