    A Slow Journey

    2022

As a highly developed coastal subtropical immigrant city, Shenzhen gathers things from different regions. There are not only a large number of alien populations, but also many alien species. Even more than 100 million square meters of land are artificially filled with silt and rocks from oceans, hills and other regions.

The giant African snail is the most common alien invasive animal in Shenzhen after the rain. This snail native to eastern Africa is huge and slow-moving. However, after decades of breeding and spreading, it has become a dominant species in many areas, including Shenzhen. .They will not only disrupt the local ecological balance, but also bring the risk of spreading viruses and parasites.

By creating land on the ocean, human footprints continue to expand to the sea, and the giant African snail also expands new habitats. In the process of intervening and transforming nature, Humanity's will to win runs through unchangeable history and an uncontrollable future.

I picked up this huge weathered and whitened African snail shell in a forest in Qianhai, Shenzhen. The snail shell is a natural loudspeaker. I made it as a sound installation, and several rain sounds recorded in several small cities in East Africa will be played in it. For the giant African snail that died in Shenzhen, its body rotting and leaving its shells empty, the sound of raindrops falling on the land of East Africa may be like a requiem from its homeland, comforting the wandering soul.

I picked up a lot of giant African snail shells in Shenzhen, and at the same time collected the soil and sand from an artificial land.I calcined giant African snail shells into lime, and I mixed the above materials together to make a small concrete boat. Giant African snail, The seabed sediment, rocks in the mountains and other materials used to fill the sea and build land once did not belong to the new land of this new city. At this moment, they are gathered together in the form of a ship, continuing to be reshaped by the history that did not belong to them, drifting on the land that lost its destination.
